Mangroves, the unique coastal ecosystems, area not only vital habitats for numerous species but also provide enormous benefits to the nearby communities. Unfortunately, the increasing presence of trash and waste in mangrove areas has become a concern. Trash accumulation in mangrove give significant risks to community health. The decomposition of organic waste in mangrove ecosystem releases harmful pollutant and provide breeding ground for disease-carrying insects. Besides that, the resulting pollution can contaminate local water resources, affecting the health and well-being of nearby communities. Communities who live near to these polluted areas are at higher risk to respiratory problems, skin infections, and other health issues caused by the contamination of air, soil, and water sources.

Addressing the problem of trash in mangroves requires an effective strategy, comprehensive and collaborative approach. Some of the effective strategies that can be implemented such as:

    • Community participation in cleaning up campaigns and awareness programs, aiming to build a sense of ownership and responsibility towards mangrove conservation.
    • Community engagement and education with the purpose to raise awareness among local communities about the importance of mangrove ecosystems and the negative impact of trash accumulation in this area.
    • Establish proper waste disposal facilities near mangrove areas, including trash bins and recycle stations.
    • Policy advocacy and enforcement to support mangrove conservation and proper waste management.

Tackling the issue of trash in mangrove is not only important for the preservation of mangrove ecosystems but also safeguarding community health and wellbeing. By raising awareness about the importance of mangroves ecosystem conservation and the negative impacts of trash accumulation, we can inspire behavioural change and promote responsible waste disposal practices.
